Tech San Diego Data Science Initiatives

While recently visiting with a Tech San Diego member company, I was asked to describe all of Tech San Diego initiatives focused on Data Science.  I took a deep breath as our initiatives are quite broad and deep.

Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, and Predictive Analytics traces their roots to San Diego There is a very energetic local industry cluster advancing these technologies and building ground breaking applications. Tech SD has worked diligently to develop a host of initiatives to highlight the region  as a center of excellence.

Cox Business AI & Machine Learning Series

Meeting bimonthly, the series takes an in-depth look at AI & Machine Learning trends. Each meeting features a presentation from a local company utilizing AI & Machine learning as a primary technology or business driver. Past presenting companies include: Brain Corporation, 5D Robotics and Data Skill.  Our next meeting is August 30th, 05:00 PM – 07:00 PM featuring CureMatch, which provides ranked personalized treatment options for a patients’ cancer.  Teradata Distinguished Speaker Series

Teradata, now headquartered in Rancho Bernardo, is one of the original and largest data science companies in the world. The quarterly distinguished speaker series brings global data science leaders to San Diego to share leading edge technology ideas and business practices. Recently, senior data scientists from Verizon and Visa spoke on a number of Data Science issues including common reasons behind the failure of Predictive Analytics projects, how to build high performing data science/analytics teams, and Advanced Modeling Techniques.  Data Science Roundtable

The Tech San Diego Data Science Roundtable is a series of bimonthly networking meetings for AI/Machine Learning/Data Science executives and managers. The roundtable is chaired by Patrick Deglon, Vice President, Advanced Analytics, Teradata. Popular topics include emerging technology tools and trends, recruiting top talent, and managing interdisciplinary organizations. Tech San Diego – Marsh Software/Data Science Compensation Survey

Tech San Diego has partnered with the Marsh Compensation Practice to aggregate and share anonymized San Diego Region software and analytics compensation data.  The survey will encompass all departmental positions, i.e., engineering, marketing, sales, and finance, allowing participants to broadly benchmark their compensation practices.  For a limited time participation is open to everyone. EDC Regional Pipeline Study

Tech San Diego works closely with the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation developing local information technology metrics and supporting growth initiatives. Kevin Carroll, Executive Director, is the Co-Chair the EDC Data Science initiative to quantify the regional demand for Data Science practitioners. To participate in the survey, click here. University Talent Initiative – Data Science

Tech San Diego works closely with the UCSD Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI) and the UCSD Rady School of Management. Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Director HDSI and Robert S. Sullivan, Dean serve on the Tech San Diego board of directors. Our collaboration comprises:

  • Sourcing Top University Talent for internships, capstone projects, and entry level positions for member companies
  • Providing private sector input to align in-demand data science skill sets with curriculum and research
  • Student Data Science Awards – showcase top UCSD data science talent and initiatives

Upcoming Data Science Initiatives 

There are several new data science initiatives in the pipeline including Data Science Day, a daylong event highlighting regional data science accomplishments. We are also working on additional content and tools to support member company recruiting of top Data Science executive, engineering, marketing, and analyst talent from both the local region and locations outside of San Diego.
