We here at Tech San Diego hope that everybody from our university communities have been having a great summer so far! We know that this summer has been especially difficult for students on a few different fronts. With many internships and professional development opportunities on hold this summer, the need for students to be self-motivated and to create their own projects has never been greater. At the same time, uncertainty created by the continued spread of the virus – in addition to political action that may impact our international student base – has made planning difficult (if not near impossible, in many cases) for the coming academic year. Please know: Tech San Diego is here for our campus communities! Our executive director recently wrote about the value of our international student communities and the enrichment they bring to our regional technology industry. And Tech San Diego continues to partner with student organizations to provide helpful resources and information during this difficult time, while also highlighting members of our local tech community who are still hiring! If your student org/department would like to collaborate, please reach out to Jarett Hartman at firstname.lastname@example.org.
In partnership with UC San Diego’s Data Science Student Society, Tech San Diego hosted a panel of Data Scientists and a UCSD Data Science Librarian to discuss the Data Science field and how students can best stay productive during quarantine. Topics included: Advice for aspiring Data Scientists and breaking into the field; What daily life is like on the job as a Data Scientist; Helpful tools for students and how best to utilize university resources, like libraries, in developing projects; and General advice for getting through this difficult moment and becoming the next generation of Data Scientists. Special thanks to Stephanie Labou from the UCSD Library and Tech San Diego members Lytx, Kiran Analytics, and Tandem Diabetes for participating!
Tech San Diego was happy to welcome to our latest T3 Podcast Oren Eden, Talent Recruiter for TuSimple, to discuss TuSimple’s goal of making freight transportation safer, what they look for in ideal candidates, and what potential employees can expect from working at a cutting-edge technology company. And better yet: they’re hiring! Give a listen to this edition to the T3 Podcast and learn about another great member of SD’s local technology ecosystem.
